Moving? What to Toss Before You Pack a Single Box

Don't pay to move things you'll throw out anyway. What to clear before a Corpus Christi move — and whether a 15 or 20-yard dumpster fits your house.

You're paying to move it twice

Every box that goes on the truck costs something — in movers, in truck size, in your own weekends. And a surprising share of what people move is stuff they'll throw out within a year of unpacking it. Clearing before you pack is the cheapest part of any move, and it's the part almost everybody skips because the packing feels more urgent.

Start where the decisions are easy

Garage, shed, attic, and the back of closets. These are the places where things go to be forgotten, which makes them the easiest calls in the house. Broken furniture, warped lumber, dead exercise equipment, boxes that haven't been opened since the last move. Do these first and you'll build momentum before you get to the rooms with actual decisions in them.

The rule that makes it fast

If you wouldn't pay somebody to carry it onto a truck and into the new place, it doesn't go. That single question resolves most of the maybe pile in about two seconds each. It also reframes the whole job usefully — you're not throwing things away, you're deciding what earns a spot in the next house.

Which size fits your house

For an apartment, a condo, or a smaller home where you're clearing the obvious stuff, the 15-yard at $425 is plenty — roughly 5–6 pickup-truck loads. For a full house with a garage and years of accumulation, or if you're clearing out a place you've lived in for a decade or more, the 20-yard at $475 is the safer call at about 7–8 loads.

Time it for the front of the move

Get the container early in the process, not the week of. Once the movers are booked and the boxes are stacked, there's no room in your driveway or your head for a cleanout. Five days is included in the price, so schedule it for the stretch when you're still sorting rather than the panic days at the end.

A few things to keep out

Paint, chemicals and tires can't go in the container, and any fridge, freezer or window AC needs refrigerant properly removed first.
